Mashad Organization Calls for Urgent, Independent International Investigation into Allegations of Chemical Weapons Use in Sudan and Urges Respect for International Law and Justice for Victims

Mashad Organization is following with deep concern the statement issued by the U.S. Department of State on May 22nd, indicating the presence of evidence suggesting that the Sudanese Armed Forces have used chemical weapons in the ongoing armed conflict in the country. The organization views these allegations with utmost seriousness due to their grave legal and humanitarian implications, and stresses the need to address them through international justice standards, guided by an impartial, independent approach free from politicization or selective application of the law.

The organization affirms that, if proven, the use of chemical weapons would constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian law and the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention, and would amount to a war crime under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. It underscores that respect for the rules of armed conflict and the protection of civilians are binding international obligations that do not lapse over time, and must be upheld by all parties to the conflict without exception or discrimination.

While Mashad Organization appreciates the Sudanese government’s announcement of the formation of a committee to investigate these allegations—considering this a positive sign of the state’s willingness to shoulder its legal and ethical responsibilities and an expression of openness to transparency and accountability—it simultaneously calls for an urgent, independent, and credible international investigation. Such an investigation should be supervised by the United Nations, with the involvement of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and other relevant technical and human rights bodies. This would ensure the pursuit of truth based on reliable scientific and legal evidence, serve justice for victims, and strengthen public confidence in both national and international institutions.

Mashad Organization values all international efforts aimed at protecting human rights and promoting accountability in Sudan, including the U.S. government’s continued monitoring of this issue. The organization emphasizes that all international initiatives must be grounded in neutrality, professionalism, and justice—free from politicization or double standards—in order to ensure justice for victims and reinforce the credibility of the international justice system.

Mashad Organization warns against the politicization of human rights issues or the exploitation of civilian suffering as a tool in geopolitical conflicts. It firmly believes that protecting victims and holding perpetrators accountable must transcend all political calculations. True justice is not built on media accusations, but on independent, professional investigations rooted in law and focused on human dignity.

Mashad Organization reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the principles of justice and ending impunity. It believes that the path to lasting peace in Sudan must pass through respect for international law, fulfillment of the Sudanese people’s aspirations for democratic civilian governance, justice for victims, and the activation of fair and transparent accountability mechanisms. There can be no stable future without accountability, no nation-building without truth, and no genuine reconciliation without comprehensive justice for all parties to the conflict.

The people of Sudan deserve truth that is not distorted, justice that is not politicized, and peace that is not built on forced settlements—but rather on human dignity, the rule of law, and honoring the sacrifices of the victims. Mashad Organization will continue its role in documentation and advocacy, and in expanding human rights and humanitarian partnerships in support of justice efforts and building a fair and secure future for all Sudanese.
