⭕️Mashad Observatory Condemns the Targeting of Medical Personnel in Nyala and Calls for Urgent Action to Protect Them and Hold Perpetrators Accountable⭕️
Mashad Human Rights Observatory expresses its strong condemnation and deep concern over the arrest of several doctors and healthcare workers in the city of Nyala by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This act constitutes a grave violation of all international norms and conventions that guarantee the protection of medical personnel and uphold the neutrality and independence of health institutions during times of conflict. This alarming escalation comes at a time when the region is experiencing a severe deterioration in humanitarian conditions and a growing need for life-saving medical services, rendering the arrest of doctors a dual crime that violates both the right to health and the right to life, directly endangering the safety and well-being of civilians.
Targeting medical staff is a blatant breach of international humanitarian law, particularly the Geneva Conventions. It reflects a systematic pattern of conduct that shows a dangerous disregard for the fundamental principles of medical and humanitarian neutrality. Furthermore, these arrests constitute a clear violation of the right to liberty and personal security and place the perpetrators under legal liability in accordance with international law.
Mashad Observatory calls on the international community—especially the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and the International Committee of the Red Cross—to take urgent and decisive action to protect healthcare workers in Sudan, ensure the immediate and unconditional release of all detained medical personnel, and hold those responsible for these recurring violations accountable. Such actions are leading to the collapse of the health system and putting the lives of thousands of patients and injured individuals at risk.
Mashad Observatory reaffirms that attacks on doctors and healthcare workers constitute crimes that do not expire with time and represent a flagrant challenge to the principles of humanity and justice. The RSF bears full legal and moral responsibility for the significant harm inflicted upon medical facilities and patients as a result of these unlawful actions. The Observatory urges all relevant international mechanisms to act swiftly to ensure the sustained protection of medical personnel and healthcare institutions in Sudan, end all forms of violations against them, deliver justice, provide redress for victims, and uphold human dignity.
